Why buried treasure never loses its lustre

England at the time was the richest and most precociously centralised kingdom in the Latin West. But just as someone wearing diamonds in a dark back-alley is bound to attract the attention of muggers, so did the glitter of English wealth prove irresistible to Viking adventurers. In 1016, after decades spent trying to buy them off, Aethelred died exhausted and unlamented; by the end of the year, the Danes had seized the entire kingdom for themselves.
