bonum futurum arduum possibile

St. Thomas Aquinas apparently defined Hope as “the expectation of a good future that is difficult but possible” (bonum futurum arduum possibile). There are also two sins vs. Hope:
(1) Over-anticipation of fulfillment, when you forget the “arduum” or difficulty involved and become too confident, taking success for granted; and
(2) Over-anticipation of failure, when you forget the “possibile” and sink into despair.
